NCDOT Design-Build Highway Improvements

Wake County, North Carolina

As sub-consultant to the prime contractor, SAM performed services for this highly complex design-build project for the North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT). Project segments included I-440/US 1 from south of Walnut St. to north of Wade Avenue, and grade separations on Beryl Road, Norfolk Southern/NC Railroad/CSX, Hillsborough St. and Blue Ridge Rd.

SAM’s initial contract scope included providing Utility Coordination services, to interact with more than 20 utility owners affected by the project to obtain relocation designs and construction permits. As project design advanced, it became apparent that existing survey files were out-of-date and/or did not include areas that were added to the project area. Under supplemental agreements with the prime, SAM also provided additional topographic surveying, boundary surveying, SUE investigations (QL-B and QL-A “test holes”), and plat preparations.

To assist the construction company with managing earthwork volumes and documenting construction progress, SAM also provided Unmanned Aerial Systems (UAS) surveying services. Project work will continue into 2023 when project construction is anticipated to be complete.
