We are delighted to announce that this year’s Sam G. Hanna Honorary Scholarship recipient is Mr. Jacob Petrekovich. Jacob is the son of Tammy and Joe Petrekovich, with Tammy serving as SAM’s Director of Administration.
Jacob Petrekovich graduated from Dripping Springs High School in June 2024. Throughout high school, Jacob demonstrated remarkable dedication to his school and community. He was actively involved in the Dripping Springs High School Garden Club, where he helped create and maintain a community garden that provided fresh produce to students and faculty. His creativity and leadership shined through his role as one of the Creative Directors for Dripping Springs High School Tiger Media, where he contributed to numerous news segments and short films. Jacob also participated in the UIL Film Team and the Dripping Springs High School Stream Team, further showcasing his diverse interests and talents.
In addition to his school activities, Jacob is committed to volunteer work and community service. He contributed to the Wreaths Across America initiative and was a member of the Creative Arts and Production team at Gateway Church. His certification as a Community Scientist allowed him to perform diagnostic tests on local streams and waterways, reflecting his strong passion for environmental science.
This fall, Jacob will attend Texas State University, where he plans to major in Computer Science and specialize in cybersecurity. His career aspirations include becoming a penetration tester on a cybersecurity team. Jacob also attended Austin Community College, where he excelled academically.
“We are very proud of Jacob’s personal and academic achievements. He’s such a humble and kind young man and we wish only the best for him in this next chapter of life. This SAM scholarship will have a significant impact on our family, and Jacob in particular, as it will reduce the amount of student loan debt he will have once he graduates,” said Tammy Petrekovich.
Jacob Petrekovich added, “I am immensely grateful for this scholarship; it feels like $10,000 of future student loan debt lifted off my shoulders! Now, I can worry less about college finances and dedicate more time and energy to my passion for computer science. I’ll have more time for student organizations with paths to further explore cybersecurity and connect to internships for career opportunities.”
