FAC-008 Solutions

Applied Science for Facility Ratings (FAC-008) Compliance

Faster, Safer, Outage-Free Conductor Identification

SAM’s patented Applied Science for Facility Ratings (ASFR) methodology is designed to help electric utilities meet NERC FAC-008 compliance faster, safer, and more cost-effectively than traditional methods. Our technology enables utilities to measure conductor attributes — such as diameter, strand count, and ampacity — with unprecedented accuracy, all without direct contact with energized equipment.

NERC’s FAC-008 guidelines require Transmission and Generation (T&G) operators to determine and document the ampacity of all conductors in the Bulk Electric System (BES), including the components like jumpers and risers. Traditionally, measuring conductors involves climbing towers, using bucket trucks, and employing digital calipers — processes that are time-consuming, costly, and carry significant safety risks. SAM’s ASFR technology eliminates these hazards and improves measurement speed and accuracy, saving utilities time and money while maintaining compliance.

SAM’s ASFR Solution

SAM’s ASFR methodology employs a combination of high-resolution cameras, AI-powered edge detection, and our proprietary SAM Inspect™ software to take accurate measurements from up to 400 feet away. Our field crews can complete up to 100 measurements per day, allowing for rapid deployment and minimal disruption to operations. This method is up to 10 times faster than traditional techniques, providing results quickly and safely without the need for bucket trucks or climbing. Measurements are accurate to within 0.03 inches, and the solution is significantly more affordable compared to conventional methods.

SAM’s ASFR solution ensures zero contact with energized equipment, greatly enhancing the safety of your team. You’ll receive real-time results directly from the field through our SAM Inspect™ data management system, making it easy to track and verify measurements. The methodology is scalable, handling large-scale projects across multiple substations and transmission lines. Additionally, data is stored securely in a web-based system, giving you instant access to both current measurements and historical data for use in GIS platforms.
