At SAM, mentorship happens naturally through collaboration and a shared commitment to growth. It’s an essential part of how our people learn, develop, and succeed together.

For Courtney Tolson, a Project Manager in our North Virginia office, this sense of mentorship took shape through his connection with John Hannel, Business Development Director and Gas Distribution Market Lead. Though Courtney wasn’t actively searching for a mentor, he quickly recognized the value of John’s guidance and how it influenced his career path.

“John has been instrumental in shaping my knowledge in business development, gas distribution, gas mapping, and overall business acumen,” Courtney shared. “He takes the time to answer my questions and helps me prepare for every project I take on.”

One of the most impactful lessons Courtney has learned from John is the art of simplifying complex concepts.

“John has a true gift for presenting our services by telling a story that captivates his audience and ensures they fully grasp every detail,” Courtney explained.

Their professional relationship extends beyond the office, with both sharing a friendly competitive spirit on the golf course. This bond highlights how mentorship at SAM goes beyond skills development—it cultivates strong relationships and camaraderie.

“John is the ultimate team player,” Courtney said. “If you ask me, I’d give him the shirt off my back—he’s done so much for me here at SAM.”

Mentorship is a natural part of our culture and a powerful reminder that the strength of our people drives success and creates lasting impacts, often in ways we least expect.
